There are 4 stages to the UK education system and students are assessed at the end of each stage:

For the undergraduate level, the student must first follow the sixth form route. This route as shown in the graph above, could be either:
Route 1: A level Programme or The International Baccalaureate Programme
Duration: 2 years
Age Limit: 15+
The A level programme is compulsory for progression into some courses like all branches of Medicine or for some universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College and at times London School of Economics.
Route 2: University Foundation programme
Duration: one year
Age Limit: 16years+
*Depending on the institution, some take 16years+ that will turn 17 in the same year they commence the programme*
Route 3: International Diploma Program or International Year one Diploma:
Duration: One Year diploma in selected programmes (Business management and Engineering programmes)
Age Limit: 18years+ with excellent results
Progression: Upon successful completion leads to 2nd year degree in the selected university.
